Book Creator in the Economics Classroom
I think the most important thing for me was the idea that I should stop thinking about technology and just start integrating technology. My goal has always been to motivate and teach my students. Technology will be used to help make this happen. We have a great staff and administration at the continuation school where I teach and collaboration has always been easy. Having a 1:1 iPad program for the last year has been challenging, but has allowed me to do some of the things that were talked about at the Summit.
In one of the sessions titled, “Connecting Learning Goals to Technology” the presenter told us that the iPad Summit is not about iPads. He went on to say that we should find a specific Hi-Tech goal and work with the staff to reach it. So, my goal is to have my students use the app called, “Book Creator” for my economics class. Students will present their essays, photographs and videos in the books that they create throughout my course. The best thing is that they will be able to keep this information for the rest of their lives. Students will be learning how to keep a budget, about their credit score, banking, using a checking account, debit cards, credit cards, how to buy a car and a house. It’s all really practical information that is useful as an adult. By keeping this information in a book that they can keep forever, the students will be prepared for the future. So this is my goal as financial security is very empowering. My students have been controlled by parents, the legal system and some teachers for most of their lives so one of the things we have talked about is self-control. Most of my students are at my school due to truancy, drug use, or time in juvenile hall, and self-control is not a skill that they have mastered. I share the idea that if a person does not have self-control then other people will control you. If you have self-control then people tend to leave you alone and do not bother you. By creating their own personal financial plan the students will have a head start towards being able to have some control of their lives.
