Description of the lesson taught:
Are your early learners in need of more fine motor control and focus? LumiKids Park App may help! Many of my TK students had a difficult time with the first STAR Early Literacy assessment. For some, it was their first experience using a computer and found it to be very tricky to control. I was looking for an app that focused on visual motor coordination to help young learners build their control. This app is an adorable way for students to practice visual motor coordination, visual discrimination, and focus. Children have a choice among three different games.
There is a Pac-Man style game that focuses on motor control. Children feed the “nom noms” with a dragging motion, while avoiding obstacles. Depending on the level, students have to switch between different critters and the “food” disappears and reappears.
Another game challenges students to sort squirmy water critters by color, shape, and size. Students determine which attribute they are sorting, then drag the critters into the correct water puddle.
The final game focuses on divided attention while little critters play hide-and-seek. Students have to watch and determine where the critters are hiding, using a tapping motion to find them. All of the games are cute, but this one is my favorite! The critters laugh as they run around a playground hiding. I found my grown up self laughing and wanting to play more.
Each game adapts to the player’s ability level. In a classroom setting, this is a little challenging because the levels don’t start over for each player. There can only be two saved players at a time, so students pick up where another left off. Sometimes it’s a little too challenging. I have two iPads in my classroom, so I have been putting them in the technology center during our learning center time. My students are really enjoying LumiKids Park and I highly recommend it!
