CDC Outbreak Free App- Disease Detectives
Type of technology: CDC Outbreak app
SAMR Model Rating: Modification
Grade level: 7th
Subject area: Life Science
Description of the lesson taught: Students choose from one of three options to solve an outbreak (In Plain Sight, Village of Gold, Sugar Plantation Blues.) Each group has to read the options before they choose what they think will be the best option in order to contain the outbreak. In partners, they are the disease detectives and need to make choices that will earn them points and save lives!
The students were able to collaborate in small groups (2-3) and try to solve an outbreak. Before they chose their next step they had to justify why they chose that particular step. There was new vocabulary in each outbreak and they were able to click on the vocabulary if they didn’t understand the meaning of a word. Before they would have to look it up or I would have to front load all of the vocab.
Here is an example of an outbreak questions:
Sugar Plantation Blues
This is a smaller outbreak. A strange sickness is overcoming a group of sugar plantation workers in Louisiana, with one hospitalized already. You will have to determine the cause and origin of this disease, as well as take steps to prevent it from spreading further.
For each clue, put a check mark next to the step you selected, and explain why you selected that choice in the space provided. At the end, write down your total score and answer the follow-up questions.
Clue #1: What should you do first?
____ Install mosquito nets in the sleeping quarters
____ Talk to the sick workers
____ Test the plantation’s lake and drinking water
Why are you choosing that option?
