DogoNews: Making Current Events Come Alive!
Type of technology: Website
SAMR Model Rating: Modification
Grade level: K-8
Subject area: English Language Arts, Social Studies and Science
Something that my students have enjoyed all year is doing Current Events. It is a great way to make cross-ciriculum come alive in your classroom. DogoNews has been a real hit for my students. It is a free website, that you can either sign up for, or just use as a resource to bring different texts into your classroom.
Here is what the website looks like. There are many categories to pick from. If you sign up for an account, you can assign this into a google classroom, or give your students access codes. I use these texts as good articles to teach close reading strategies to for struggling readers.
Once I have picked an article, I read through it, and there is usually a video that is attached to each article. Sometimes for my different groups I decide to show the video first, front loading vocabulary and information. Other groups, I show the video after we have discussed the article.
Article Comprehension, Critical Thinking Challenge, Vocabulary, and Geography: The crucial pieces to using this website!
Article Comprehension: Under each article, are usually between 3-5 comprehension questions. I use this to help guide my discussions with the articles.
The Critical Thinking Challenge: A good extension for students, getting them to think outside of the box.
Vocabulary: These words are not only bold at the bottom of the article, but are bold throughout the article. You can click on the word for it to give you a definition. If we are reading this on our devices, this is an easy way to help place the word in context. If I print the articles for my students, they know that these words they may need to look up, but also that they are important to understanding the main ideas of the article.
Geography: Each article ties in different parts from around the world. If you click on a place that is highlighted, it takes you to Google Maps, where it will help you see where this place is. This helps create good connections for students.
This website is a great tool to use on devices, or to print hard copy for students who need that accommodation. This is the highlight of the week because my students are interested in the current event topics, and learning about what is going on in our world.
