Background: The Dream Exploration project was developed for students in 7th grade Technology courses – to develop internet research skills to solve a realistic real-world challenge, produce a high quality slideshow presentation which would be orally presented to the class. Now with the ability to easily post documents online, with slight modifications I used this lesson in my EL Technology course where English is a second language for 100% of my students and 8 different languages spoken. Although the project itself required a fair amount of complex internet research skills – 2 things in particular made the project engaging and accessible for all:
First, the product is a slideshow, requiring the use of images to help convey ideas. Collecting and and manipulating images is engaging for most students – especially when given the challenge of going someplace new on a limited budget.
Second, the strategic use of Google Translator assisted many of my students both in understanding the instructions, but later getting information back from sites in other languages into their projects in English. This allowed students more comfort and precision in their web searches while holding them accountable to learning new English phrases in context.
