Do you want your students to be excited about reading everyday? Then get Epic! Epic (getepic.com) is a free online library. When I first learned about it, I couldn’t believe it was real, but it is…and it’s epic!
I introduced Epic to my first grade students about a month ago. First, I just showed them the website and read one of the books aloud to them. I also showed them the “read to me” books and played one for them to enjoy. Then, I asked them if they wanted to try it. I have never seen my class so excited to read, and my students already love reading.
I quickly showed them how to access the website/app, put in their age, select their reading interests, and browse for books. Within about five minutes all of my students were logged in and reading and/or listening to books being read to them.
I “let” them read for about a half hour, and it was hard to get them to stop. It wasn’t quiet, but there was a nice buzz of excitement and learning. Students were reading out loud, showing each other the books they found, and talking about their books. Afterwards, we all sat in a circle and shared what books we read. Now, every time I let my students read using Epic! they are so excited.
There is a huge variety of books to choose from, and even my lowest readers can benefit from listening to books and enjoying literature independently.
I love this website/app for many reasons: it is free, students love it, it has great variety, students are reading, and it is much easier to manage independent reading time when students have books available without needing to wander around the room and get books off of a shelf.
I still have a lot to lean about this website/app, apparently there are ways to monitor students’ reading and other helpful teacher and student options, but for now I am so happy to have found a FREE way for my students to have access to a huge online library.
It takes a little bit of time to set up your class, but not much, and it is a pretty straightforward process. I just set up my free teacher account, and then made all of my students users on my account. If you want your students to have access at home, there are affordable ways to do this using the parent accounts.
Happy reading. Get Epic!
