Description of the lesson taught:
Looking for an easy way to start using technology in your Kindergarten classroom? Look no further than Educreations. I understand from first hand experience that the idea of using technology in primary can be scary and seem unmanageable, but I have found Educreations to be both effective and easy to incorporate into existing lessons.
Educreations is, on a basic level a virtual white board that you can write on, type on, add pictures to, and record your voice over to create a complete project. I have found many creative uses for this app in my own classroom. I have used Educreations in various lessons across subject areas including, but not limited to Writing, Math, Language Arts and Science. Educreations helps to enhance the basics, collaborate to achieve a learning objective, create technology assisted visuals, and allows students to be creative in a mode that can be recorded and presented.
The following pictures are examples of lessons I have done using Educreations:
We did an apple tasting and had a discussion of which Apple my students liked the best. I took a picture of each student and they interacted with the ipad to move their picture to the preferred side. The kids were engaged by the visual and took ownership of the project using this app.
Our first Math unit was all about shapes. I pulled pictures from the Internet of different buildings and took pictures of buildings on our campus. I had the students draw in the educreations app to name all the shapes they could find on the buildings. Students then recorded their voices over the picture naming the different shapes they found. Students presented their findings.
In the Lucy Caulkins Curriculum, we are teaching students to label their pictures before they write. I took pictures of my students Gardening. I had students use the typing feature to label the picture. I then had each child record their voice dictating what was happening in the picture. Students played back their recording and tried to sound out what they wanted to write about.
We had a Math Talk in my classroom and then broke off into small group Math centers. My group used the Educreations app, two to an ipad to try and solve a word problem. They could pull pictures from the Internet, with assistance, and explain their thinking visually.
Using the FOSS curriculum, we were studying fish. In a lesson about the parts of a fish, I had students label the parts in Educreations over a picture from the Internet. Students used the visual to show what they knew and it was a fun and interactive way to have something to add to our science notebooks.
These are just some the ways I have used Educreations to bring a technology component to my Kindergarten classroom and to enhance my lessons and student’s learning. Educreations is a way to easily incorporate technology in your Kinder Curriculum. I encourage you to get creative try and “educreate” one of your lessons today!
