Fooducate is an easy-to-use, free smartphone app and website that helps students make healthier food choices. One can use the app to scan the UPC barcode on a food or simply search for the food by type or brand to discover the nutritional information associated with that food item. Fooducate also gives each food a rating of A through D, with A being the foods that are best to consume. If a food has a low nutritional rating, Fooducate will suggest healthier alternatives.
I am lucky to have a 1:1 iPad program at the continuation high school where I teach so I can have Students in my Health and Life Science classes use Fooducate to scan foods at home or at school. Teenagers are notorious for eating unhealthy foods so it has been beneficial to have them look up the foods they consume on the weekends, what they bring to school for lunch, or what they eat at home for dinner.
The chart to the right is an activity worksheet available on the Fooducate website and below is an example of a worksheet that I have my students fill out for a week so that they can see the ratings and nutritional value of the foods they eat for a week. After monitoring their food for a week, we discuss what they notice about their food choices, changes they can make, and the long-term effects of eating a healthy diet.
