During my first year teaching, I have developed a greater understanding on how to use technology in my classroom. I have learned the term “1,000 dollar pencil” in relation to the use of technology, which simply put describes using technology in ways that does not redefine instruction. This term is now embedded in my psyche, ensuring that I always reflect and determine if I am using the technology at my disposal in ways that will not only engage and supplement my students education, but also allow them to showcase their learning.
An application that I found to be a great tool in providing students with these opportunities is Educreations. Educreations provides students with an interactive white board to be used in a variety of ways. This user friendly application allows users to upload photographs, files, or videos (in app purchase) to a digital white board, then add text, notes, or my personal favorite, voice recordings.
The voice record option is a feature that provides students with a great opportunity to showcase their understanding of content by recording their own voices! For example, this feature provides students with the opportunity to first solve a mathematical equation with the digital white board, then explain their mathematical reasoning on how they solved the equation by recording their voices explaining their thought process. In a classroom with 30+ students, this feature will allow the teacher to listen to each students explanations of their work to check their level of understanding, or their area of need, either during the students independent practice, or after class as an assessment of student learning.
The ability to insert photographs onto your digital white board is another great feature Educreations provides. This feature allows students to get creative with whatever content they are working on. For example, while working on angles and plane figures, I had my students use the camera feature on our school iPads and go to our school playground and take pictures of the basketball court, monkey bars, playground, etc.. After the photography segment, the students were then required to upload those photos onto Educreations and identify the different types of angles or plane figure they had found on campus. This provided insight to their level of understanding of angles and plane figures by showcasing their abilities to identify those figures or angles, but also provided the students with the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding by adding a voice recording of the characteristics needed for those angles or plane figures to be identifiable. This activity made our plane figures and angles unit more engaging and interactive, as well as allowed the students to take ownership of their learning through their active participation in the activity.
All in all, having the opportunity to use technology in the classroom provides students with a unique opportunity to enhance their education. Although technology is now at our disposal as educators, we need to continue to use this technology in a way supplements and enhances our instruction, rather than provides students with a “1,000 dollar pencil.” Educreations takes the simple concept of a digital white board and redefines that concept with its additional features to provides students with a unique opportunity to get creative with their education. So all that is left to do now is to go onto the App Store and begin to get Educreative with Educreations!
