Do you wish you had the space and money for a fun and engaging doll house? My Play Home is a digital doll house app that allows imaginative users to interact with characters and rooms around the house. It even includes the car! This is a beautifully illustrated app that children can use to play house without the need for a doll house and everything that comes with it. The doll house characters can turn on and off the lights, feed the fish, and fry an egg, and take a nap. Characters can move from the kitchen to the bedroom with a simple tap on an arrow. They can also go outside or take a trip in the car. There are endless story-creating possibilities.
My TK class used this app during our families unit. Students enjoyed selecting the characters to create a family just like theirs. They found out that the characters’ skin color can be changed to provide an even better reflection of their own families.
This was a great way to focus on vocabulary and language development. Students identified the people in the family, the rooms in the house, objects around the house, and worked on sentence structure. Sentence structures included, “This is my mom.” and “I have 1 brother and 1 sister.” It was exciting for students to learn new words and interact with the characters and their peers. They also loved sharing about their families, making this activity personal and meaningful.
My Play Home is a great app to promote receptive and expressive language. There is also a school edition that I’m considering for one our units in the fall. Let the language development continue!
