Would you like your charges to read a kid friendly version of the New York Times every day? If so, explore Newsomatic. The makers of this program have included features that are inviting for kids as well as many that are useful to teachers.
Five days a week the students will have access to five or six top news stories. Videos, slides shows and games are included as well. The kids can also respond to the stories by posting comments to the editor.
Teachers can sign their students up by their lexile reading level so that all students can access the stories. Listening to the stories or reading them is Spanish are also options. Quizzes are available to check comprehension.
This is a great source for examples of informational writing. With the ability to print the article, I will sometimes remove the first or last paragraph and have the kids write their own introduction or conclusion. Then we can compare our own to what a professional writer submitted. Text marking using the highlighter provided will also allow assigns like looking for main ideas, examining use of punctuation, finding parts of speech or anything that would enhance a focus you have in class.
The best part of all is that the articles are interesting to kids. As a society, we need a well informed public. Newsomatic is a step in the right direction.
