Looking for ways to engage your students during Math? I have found that over the course of the last few years that using videos to enhance Math learning does a few things for my students. The first thing it does is allows them to become excited and interested in the topic that is being introduced. They are also engaged, while being set up for success for the remainder of the lesson.
I came across Math Antics on Youtube when I was looking for a video to introduce Polygons to my class. I did a little background research and found that this small company has done some wonderful productions for introducing difficult topics for children of all ages.
What is Math Antics?
Math Antics was founded by Jeremy and Rob, who had the goal of making math a little easier for students. They have a website www.mathantics.com where you can purchase a year membership for $20 to have access to videos, worksheets, lessons, and extra exercises to enhance learning.
However, the cool thing about this is that the videos are all free!
How is it set up?
Math Antics is broken into 5 categories: arithmetic, fractions, geometry, percents, and algebra basics. You click on a tab and you see videos according to specific topics.
How does it work?
I first selected “Polygons” and watched the 8 minute video. The video was very engaging. My students refer to the guy as “Mr. Math Antics” and he introduces the topic with lots of color and movement around the screen. This captures students attention and allows them to get excited about.
The video also had time for student interaction. He put up multiple shapes and asked if they were or were not polygons. My students automatically jumped in and we discussed the reasons they were or were not polygons.
These videos are for all levels of learners. I found that even going back to review Place Value was helpful for my students before gearing up for state testing.
This website is a great tool to use in your classroom. I hope your students enjoy as much as mine do.
