It really is better than sliced bread!
Some people get excited when their favorite basketball team makes it to the finals (Go Warriors!). Others become enthused when they hear that the latest Iphone is going on sale or that Beyoncé is dropping a new album. Do you know what excites me? Learning that one of my favorite websites has gotten an upgrade!
As a k-6 teacher, you have to visit multiplication.com. It will greatly help your students learn (or relearn) their times tables. Let me pause for a moment and count the ways I love it so:
Engaging Fluency Practice
We all know that rote memorization practice can get boring. This site puts the fun back in learning your times tables. Students are able to play multiplication games and learn at the same time. My students love using it and want to get on the website all the time.
If you just want students to study flash cards, they can do that too!
I started using the quizzing feature this year and I love it! The website’s self- correcting quizzes have saved me so much time! I don’t have to test individual kids on all their facts or waste time correcting multiplication tests.
There are two ways that you can have students take a quiz:
I usually have them take a quiz up through a fact family to ensure that they really memorized their facts from a previous level.
If one of my students is having trouble memorizing a particular fact, I have them watch the site’s mini-lesson. It provides the students with a memorization trick to learn the fact.
If you click on the resource tab you will find free flashcard printables and much, much more!
Provides Basic Fact Fluency Practice
Don’t let the website name fool you! Once you journey to the website, students will be given the option to practice addition, subtraction, and division facts. They can also take quizzes on these facts as well.
So Shawna Why Are You So Excited?
I already know what you’re thinking. How could multiplication.com get even better? What upgrade did they make?
The site added a teacher’s account!
This means that you can track all your students’ progress online! The teacher account is free! All you have to do is sign up with your email and register your students. The system provides an avatar name and username for each child.
Once the students are logged on, the program gives them a quick quiz and then adjusts its instruction to match the child’s needs.
As a teacher you can print out reports to easily monitor how the students are doing. This is perfect because the students have the option to play “other fun games” that are not math related; by running the class report, you can see if your students were truly on task.
Get Parents Involved
The other great thing about this website, is that parents can sign their child up for a free account and monitor their progress at home! It’s quick, easy and painless. The child will be engaged and the parents can easily see how their son or daughter is progressing towards their goals.
Use In the Classroom
Mulitiplication.com is a great supplemental resource to add to your math instructional block. This resource would work well as a station or during workshop time.
I truly hope you will give this website a try!
Until next time, Happy Multiplying!
