I became aware of an amazing app from a colleague who, like me, commutes to work. She shared with me the wonderful world of audio books and because of this app I have been able to transform various project-based learning projects for my independent studies students. I am not sure how this would work with a larger class size because I do not know how many “copies” are released at one time. However, you would still be able to bring in any device you have the app loaded on and share with a class as a whole.
I have several students who need English credit, often times one or two credits in each subject, and English has been difficult to get my students engaged in. Since it is required that each of my students obtain a library card and load this free app, I have been able to use OverDrive for not only audiobooks, but for ebooks and movies.
Several of my students do not enjoy reading, and I have had students come in the next week and say that they finished their first book in 7 hours! Not only are they then able to engage in thought provoking conversations pertaining to a particular piece of literature, but they feel empowered to continue reading various ebooks for recreational reading. Audiobooks have really changed the way my students feel about literature. I have also checked out a documentary and showed a clip that went along with a writing prompt. I highly recommend this app. The documentaries and educational videos can enhance any subject matter and the audio books and ebooks make reading and comprehension accessible and attainable for every student.
This is how it works…
Download the free app and create an account, at this point you are will search for your local library. You are then able to search through thousands of ebooks, audiobooks, and movies from your local library. Once you have checked out an item, you have access to it for 3 weeks, just as you do when you check it out at the library. Public libraries are beefing up their digital collections and so far I have not had a problem finding what I am looking for.
You can use the audiobooks on your mobile app, or on your computer. The Overdrive desktop app supports transfer to a variety of devices and in some cases, burning to CD.
