Plickers – Clickers without the devices

I recently learned about a new, free app called Plickers, https://www.plickers.com/. To get the app on your Iphone, go to the App Store and search for Plickers. To get the app on your Ipad or Android Tablet, go to the plickers website and click on the link to the appropriate app store. The website is also where you will set up your classes. You use your mobile device to gather the students’ answers.
Many teachers have wanted to used clickers to do quick formative assessments in their classrooms but either the cost of the devices was too high or they had more students than devices.
Well, it looks like Plickers will help with both of these issues.
Instead of clickers, each student is assigned a card that you print out. This means it works for up to 40 students. You can reuse the same set of cards for each class or one suggestion I got was to have students attach them to the inside of their notebook so they have them with them and can hold up their notebook with the card showing.
They simply turn the card so that the letter of their answer choice is on top, you then use your Iphone, Ipad or Android Tablet to scan their cards to gather the results. The shape on each card is different and the letters are small so students won’t easily be able to see what the other students are answering. You can use Plickers for multiple choice questions as well as polls. You don’t even need to scan each card individually, below is an example of a teacher using their Ipad to gather the results.
Here is a quick overview of Plickers.
You use the app on your mobile device to ask the question and scan the cards, but you need their website, https://www.plickers.com/ to create your class and print out the cards. Here is a longer video showing how the whole process works.
