Are you looking for a new and fun way for students to create presentations? Puppet Pals is a great app that allows students to create simple narratives, highlighting their own voice. The app come with various scenes and characters that students can use to create a fun and unique story. It’s great for language development! There is also the option to upload photos from the internet or from your own photo library. Students can then choose from an endless amount of scenes, characters, and storylines.
I used this app as an end of unit assessment for our IB unit, Sharing the Planet. During this unit, TK students learn about animals and their habitats. With the help from our 4th grade Big Buddies, students researched their favorite animals. They found out where the animal lives, what they eat, and an interesting fact. Big buddies help students read and write, while TK students created the illustration. They completed a graphic organizer to help keep them focused.
Using google, I saved various pictures of animals and habitats onto my iPad. Students then selected the habitats and animal they wanted to use. In order to add the animal to the scene, students had to trace around the animal on the iPad. This was a little tricky for TK fingers but great practice. After practicing their story a few times, students were ready to record their presentation. Some had to give it a few tries but the results were great.

My students enjoyed creating these “movies” and loved sharing and watching them with their friends. If possible, I would recommend doing this in a quite space. The microphone picks up background noise, which was difficult to avoid in a room full of 5 year olds. 🙂
I hope you enjoy using Puppet Pals as a new way to present topics in your classroom.
