ReadWorks really Does
ReadWorks Provides ELA Sources
For many of us the last four to five years have been a scramble for materials to align with the Common Core. If your district is like ours, we have yet to adopt ELA materials. It was so nice to find ReadWorks to help in this arena.
There are many components to this site, but the passages were the most useful to me. They are leveled by grade so that the appropriate subject matter for your students. It also provides the lexile level. If needed, you can explore other grade levels for the needs of your class. They are categorized literary and informational as well as topic.
One of the nicest features is the paired passages. It’s easy to spend hours looking for articles or stories that belong together at the same level for the essay writing students do in the different genres.
Questions in the form of multiple choice and short answers are provided for each piece. You can check for standards as well as using Step Reads, which provides a simpler version for struggling readers. Don’t feel you have to limited by these questions. These passages can be used for any purposes that align with the standards that you are focusing on. Vocabulary is also addressed with worksheets included.
These passages can also be used to practice summary writing and text marking. I have distributed literary pieces with the last half cut off so that students can finish the story in their own way. I have also omitted introductory and concluding paragraphs requiring that students write their own for that article.
This is a free site and the articles can be printed.
