Runkeeper app in Physical Education (PE) class
Type of Technology: App (Runkeeper)
SAMR Model Rating: Redefinition
Grade Level: 6-12
Subject Area: Physical Education
Description: Runkeeper is a FREE app downloadable for both Apple and Android devices for iPads and Smartphones. It tracks exercise, set goals, and allows progress to be tracked along the way. It is used by 50 million users to track all forms of exercise from walking to running marathons.
I teach at a continuation high school where we are teaching students life skills as well as those they need in the academic world. Students in my PE classes download the app to their smartphones, log in with an email account, and set up their profile data (name, birthdate, language, height and weight) and adjust activity settings.
Students use the app when walking the school’s parking lot during our PE class or outside of PE class to make up missed classwork. They record their resting pulse in the log before leaving the classroom and when they walk out of the classroom, they launch Runkeeper. After the walking activity is completed, they record their post-walk pulse rate and Runkeeper data in their PE log using a low tech ( Paper) or high tech process (Google Sheets or Apple Numbers).
Here is a screen shot of a walking activity around the school parking lot, but you can see that no matter where you walk or run, the app will keep track of your movements, how far you walked, how long it took and how many calories you burned. My students are now paying attention to all the walking they do throughout the day, not just in PE class.
