Success with EDU blog now offers a way to spice up class discussions on Georgia Math’s Number Talks.
We have been given many materials to do math with our new Common Core Standards. The main binder is exercises from Georgia Math. They encourage number talk class discussions. I have found that over time these discussions needed some spice to keep the math talk alive. I went into the assignments in EDU/NEO and used the Team Assignment to create a whole new way for the students to communicate.
As a teacher you can assign teams. This picture below is where you select and name each team.
Then the students are allowed to communicate with each other on the same team. They text messages back and forth on their news text option working together on math questions and solutions. The number talk discussions are found in the Georgia Math binders we received this year.
As a teacher you can see their discussions and see the contribution from each student. Then as a team they can pick one student to submit their final response.
You can then assign grades based on participation as well as their final correct response. This is like any group project or discussion, but the added difference is the ability for you as a teacher to watch as they are working and see who is participating along the way and at the end of the assignment. No longer can students claim they did all the work or complain about others not doing their part. You are big brother in this sense and you can see it all.
You can adapt this idea for many assignments in your class. It is a great tool provided within the EDU/NEO program. Let me know how it works for you.
