Technology and Little Buddies
Buddy Time and Cross Age Tutoring
On our campus the upper grade classes team with the lower for activities during the school year.
With one to one iPads in our class, this is a perfect way to tutor the younger ones. It’s important that the older students are fluent with the app being shared. It’s a boon to the lower grade teacher as trouble shooting for 26 eight olds is impossible at best.
Here are some ideas:
Student pairs go outside to take photographs of leaves, areas of grass, hedges etc. Returning to the classroom they can either create 3D creatures, or drawings of animals who would blend into that photo. The kids can create imaginary animals or draw real animals. It’s fun to share on the Apple TV.
Another photography project which requires going outside. The kids go outside to find shapes in nature. Once back in the classroom they can transfer the photos to an app like Screen Chomp and then draw the shapes on the photos, screenshot it and repeat. These are also fun to share with the group.
This is a fun app for telling a quick story. It is geared toward a younger set, but can be a fun way to convey information for older kids too.
This is a fun augmented reality program. Aurasma’s image recognition technology uses an iPad’s camera to recognize real world images and then overlay media on top of them in the form of animations, videos and photos. We practiced by taking images of jokes with an overlay of punchlines.
So take advantage of the tutors you have on campus. The kids love working together which makes for a lively, productive time for all.
