Thoughts on the Modern Age
As a teacher in the modern age, well actually as anyone in the modern age, it is necessary to do some soul searching when it comes to the use of technology. As teaching professionals, it is imperative to think through our use of materials and devices. Not only will it undoubtedly come up with parents, but it’s a big picture consideration about the world we are creating. It’s a human consideration of health, well being and safety.
Personally, I have embraced the use of technology from the start. It’s clearly a necessary part of a modern education. It also allows for so many possibilities. Never has information had this limitless possibility. Never have we had such a wealth of learning formats and sources to help engage our students.
That being said, the unease a parent might feel is real and founded, and we should all be on our guard. With the wealth comes the dangers, not only in what is accessible, but in our habits as human beings. The cyber world has much to offer, but we still need to relate to the real world. We really have no idea how the massive amount of screen time people now engage in daily will change our thoughts and relationships, but it deserves our careful attention and it is clear that there are dangers.
There is no easy answer here. It seems only that we must be diligent in making good choices about the types of assignments and the amount of screen time it requires as well as attention to sources necessary. It seems to me that a balance of time on and off the device should always be considered. With schools fortunate enough to have individual devices that are taken home, it must be stressed that once homework is done, that the device should be put away to encourage other kinds of activity which do not involve a screen.
This is truly new territory. Much like past generations dealing with television, and video games, technology has become exponential in its possibilities as well as in its threats. If we can teach moderation and thoughtfulness in this area, then we can use technology without it using us.
